Grade: 1-2 With puns, jokes, and a great deal of joy, the whimsical Betman introduces the Hebrew Alef-Bet to beginning Hebrew students.
Each lesson begins with the name of the letter and one or two important Hebrew words (with a full description) that begin with that letter. A set of discrimination exercises allows students to practice identifying and distinguishing the new letter from other letters learned.
- Alef: Betman introduces the letter Alef by saying, "Alef is the first letter of the Alef-Bet, and it's also the first letter of the word 'Alef-Bet'! That's a lot of Alefs!"
- Bet: Betman introduces the letter Bet by saying, "Bet is the second letter of the Alef-Bet, and it's the first letter of my name, Betman! I'm the hero of the Alef-Bet!"
- Gimmel: Betman introduces the letter Gimmel by saying, "Gimmel is the third letter of the Alef-Bet, and it's the first letter of the word 'gammal', which means 'camel'. Camels are big and strong, just like the letter Gimmel!"
- Dalet: Betman introduces the letter Dalet by saying, "Dalet is the fourth letter of the Alef-Bet, and it's the first letter of the word 'delet', which means 'door'. Doors open and close, just like the letter Dalet has a little door in the middle of it!"
I hope these examples give you a taste of the whimsical and joyful tone of the book. I think it would be a great addition to any classroom or home library where Hebrew is being taught.
