Dealing With the True Story of Hanukkah

  • Hanukkah

Last weekend, Joel did a workshop with the parents of high-school aged children here in the Los Angeles area. He did a session that was a grownup version of The True Story of Hanukkah.

When we asked Joel how it went, he told us that some of the adults were upset that he’d shattered the myth of the oil and “ruined Hanukkah” for them.

In that spirit, we want to point you towards a great article in this week’s Jewish Journal by Danya Ruttenberg. Danya is an accomplished writer, a soon-to-be-ordained student at the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies, and one of the authors of our soon-to-be-published book, God: Jewish Choices for Struggling with the Ultimate.

Danya’s article is a thoughtful exploration of the historical background of Hanukkah, the true themes of the holiday, and how adults can deal with that reality and still love latkes.

Enjoy reading it, and Hag Urim Sameah.
