Sukkot is the festival of booths. A sukkah is a booth. It remembers three times in Jewish history when Jews lived in sukkot: (1) during the forty years in the wilderness, (2) when harvesting fields during the time of the judges and kings, and (3) when making a pilgrimage to Jerusalem while the Temple was still standing. The primary symbols of etrog and lulav are introduced without explanation in the Torah. They are waved daily and invite explanation. In this lesson students will learn about the symbols associated with the holiday of Sukkot. If possible, take your students into the sukkah when learning this lesson, as a set induction or when you are finished with the lesson. Allow the students to shake the lulav and etrog and experience the joyful parts of the holiday.
