Building Jewish Life: Beit K'nesset

Grades: 1-3        BJL Synagogue looks at the synagogue as a dynamic place. Its central focus is the model of synagogue as including three basic functions—a beit tefillah (a house of prayer), a beit midrash (a house of study), and a beit k'nesset (a house of gathering). 

This lesson covers the idea of a synagogue as a Beit K'nesset, a house of gathering. We will focus on different celebrations and joyful events that take place in the synagogue. The term Beit K'nesset may be confusing because in many synagogues Beit K'nesset refers to both the building and the sanctuary. In this case, we are specifying its use as a gathering place.
